Schermerhorn Blog post #5

1. Rosen's overall argument is that in today's world networks have given people the ability to share with millions who they are as a person and how they want people to portray them.
2.The audience of this article would be anyone who is caught up with the digital technologies. I know this by the examples she refers to like  WELL, Friendster, and Orkut she just expects you to know what she is referring to. She does explain WELL a little more in detail but if the viewer is not technologically up to date they would still be clueless on the matter.
3.Rosen is credible because it is her own opinion. She doesn’t particularly state facts she is more or less stating the obvious truth you could find out yourself.
4. Rosen is very biased but not in a way that would push a different opinionated viewer away. She is biased in the fact that she believes technology has changed the way people present themselves. For instance she says, "today, in the world of online social networks,
the oracle’s advice might be show thyself." She is biased in the belief that networking has changed the human species.
5. I love the way she rights this, pulling in history into the new technological generations comparing and contrasting the different aspects of how people share themselves online; this makes her seem more credible. I completely agree with his article I also believe that networking has changed people, not for the better or the worse, just changed in general. The way people write, talk, and present themselves.

Schermerhorn blog post #4

A drink with the ability to make your life into an adventure seems empowering. A drink that can flow through your body, from your head to toes, overwhelming the body with that good, free, and optimistic feeling seems extraordinary. A drink that turns an ordinary day into a day that the world is a place of full of happiness is remarkable. This is Lipton Tea. Well, at least this is how it is portrayed in its advertisement. Humans strive to be happy, healthy, and daring. The world is engulfed with so many negative affairs it slips in to the lives of everyone.  As Aart Van Der Leeuw once said “The mystery of live is a problem to be solved but a reality to be experienced.” In the Lipton Tea advertisement the maker is suggesting a way to escape the everyday routine of life and escape into a world of pure happiness nothing more nothing less.
The music played throughout engages the mind to feel “good.” The beat is positive, almost uplifting. The rhythm makes the listener want to move, get active. The woman’s voice first grabs the attention of a female, because we are expecting her to say something geared toward women, but the way she speaks it toward a man. Her voice is serene yet has this tone of being strong, she says, “I belong, to all that I’ve been through.” This way the commercial grabs both the female and males attention. The upbeat song sets the mood for the rest of the commercial, allowing the viewer to get the mind set of happiness and sink into the advertisement allowing them to take a breath from their everyday routine; just like the girl is doing in the add.
The woman is a model, tall, thin, has perfect hair, and an earthy look about her. Her clothes are casual and simple yet stylish compared to everyone else wearing suites, conforming to their everyday routine. This also appeals to both men and women. It appeals to women because majority of women strive to look as she does; just simple, yet perfect. It appeals to a man senses because she is, well, hot. Men see her as something they can’t have yet the male comes up to her whipping her away on his motorcycle. This gives men hope that if more women drink Lipton Tea more women will be up for any adventure.
As she is drinking the tea her body begins to turn into a pallet of leaves, water and light, almost as if she is glowing of happiness. A look of fulfillment and delight come upon her face as if it is the best day of her life. The music then becomes more upbeat and brisker. She then released a butterfly, representing celebration, lightness, and transition; the transition into becoming a free spirit. This is something everyone wants in life, the ability to just live and not worry about work, road construction, and traffic. Lipton Tea gives you this. She begins to walk across the street and spots a male on a scooter. This once again appeals to both female and male audiences in the fact that women will be drawn to his gorgeous facial features and males will have hope that they could swift, a woman like her, away.
They both look free, free to the world around them. They pass a little girl with a face mask on. This little additive creates such a large part to this commercial. Masks are a way to hide the true self, as if it protects you. The little girl looks at the woman on the scooter admiring her beauty and glowing ways; take away by the majestic woman and man with pure happiness on their faces. The little girl is the only person in the entire city crowed that even acknowledge this beauty, everyone else is immersed into their routine. The woman on the scooter waves to the little girl showing her compassion and enjoyment. This is now the little girl role model in the fashion of the way to live life as an adventure.
They begin driving away on the scooter out of the city and the narrator says, “With the goodness of fresh picked tea leaves, water, and sunshine.” As she says this they go through a tunnel and on the other side there is a beautiful mountain seen with the ocean, giving the viewer a since of awe. This pureness is now radiating not only through the woman but thorough her surroundings as well. This feeling of “good” becomes stronger. The narrator explains why she is glowing and full of tea leaves and water, this is all the tea consists of pure ingredients. Before the viewer can make an assumption about the tea being natural and good for you the narrator says, “New 100% natural Lipton Ice Tea.”

In class writing #4 Schermerhorn

There are images of students who have either achieved something or are working hard on a project or computer. In every picture the students seem happy and interactive in some way. They use Virginia tech maroon and orange showing Hokie spirit. They also use blue on the sidebar to contrast the maroon and orange to direct you to other sites. The Virginia tech site is very easily navigable, and if you can’t find what you are looking for there is a search box in the right top hand corner. The headline says Virginia tech, invent the future; this is the biggest text on the screen. The website also has quick links and my VT. This homepage would either appeal to people researching the college or students that already go here. I go to the homepage if I’m searching for any information on tech that I do not already know. The homepage says that Virginia teach is a place full of students that love what they do and how they are accomplishing their degree. The site says that Virginia Tech is a place to “invent the future.”

Schermerhorn Blog post #3

I Googled rainforest frogs.
1.     The first site that came up was http://rainforest-australia.com/frogs.htm, this is a site referring to the frogs in Australia’s rainforest. It contains facts about the deferent species, along with their scientific name and a picture. The second site contains photographs of the rainforest frogs. It is similar to the first site in the fashion that is has the picture of the frog and a link underneath with the name and scientific name of each species. This site although has rainforest frogs from around the world. This site is http://travel.mongabay.com/topics/rainforest_frogs.html, it does not seem as reliable as the first, it contains a lot more advertisements. The third site is a slideshow of frogs with little fun facts under each picture. This site is http://kids.mongabay.com/slideshows/rainforest-frogs/, it is another page from the previous site. These results are fairly similar in the idea that they give a picture and some information about rainforest frogs.
2.     I chose to have my roommate Google rainforest frogs as well. I was really surprised; she had the exact same results as I did. I guess they were the same since we both probably Google the same kind of words considering our classes are mostly the same and we visit the same sites.
3.     Doing this experiment I was really surprised that Pariser’s argument was not supported. I think that the individual search is a good thing because it usually gives you what personally you are looking for. Personalized research impacts our research in only showing the user their views, but that is usually what we want to read anyways.

In class writing #3 schermerhorn

1.      The image of the man and woman wearing similar clothes and the text “good Work Sister” at the top shows the equality between the two genders.
2.      The purpose is to inform women of their new role and acceptance in the workforce, the text “we never figures you could so a man-sized job” is creating a sense of amazement in the abilities of women in this era, they are also congratulating them in their ability to get so far.
3.      The audience would be women who are in the workforce or are thinking of joining, the ad is setting a sense of welcoming from the men in the factories by the smile and expression on his face.
4.      I believe the creator is the government or big companies trying to recruit women to the workforce.
5.      They appeal to logos with the text “America’s women have met the test,” if other women can meet the requirements why can’t you. This ad appeals to ethos by creating a sense of ethical appeal in wanting to do your part, to help do a “man-sized job.” Last but not least the ad also appeals to pathos with showing that everyone needs to help do their part to have victory.
6.      With the culture context women in this era were supposed to stay home with the kids, cook and clean; this ad is defying all odds stating that women can equal men in the workforce and industry jobs.

Schermerhorn blog post #2

Digital Natives have been conformed to a school system that does not fit our current generation and generations to come. I more or less agree with Nicolas Carr, I believe that the internet is changing the way the human mind works. Not only Google, but the internet as a whole, is making our attention span shorter and destroying our capacity to think on our own. We need a school system that teaches kids to think on their own before conforming to society becoming digitally literate.
The buildings would be more welcoming, with a lot of windows and inviting colors. This would create an enjoyable atmosphere where students would look forward to spending seven hours in. Each classroom would have one teacher to every ten to fifteen students creating a classroom where each student is involved. The subjects would be the same as they are now but you wouldn’t be graded on busy work and test. Students would put the material to use with projects expanding their knowledge, not just working to pass an SOL. When students work to pass a test they just do what needs to be done to get by, that’s why the internet has become so depended upon. Google thinks for students so they don’t waste time brainstorming or truly creating their own opinions. I do not believe the problem is what is being taught, it is how teachers are expected to teach the material.
Nicolas Carr believes Google is rewiring the way we think and diminishing our attention span, but that is not the only thing making humans stupid. It’s the ability to learn information without having to put time and effort into it. Students learn information, take a test and never revisit the information they had just obtained. That is the true problem, the material covered throughout high school is vital to understand simple things in life. Although not everyone will use geometry or writing stories with their future jobs, it still makes that individual better-rounded. Students need to learn, obtain, and put into action the material taught in school.

blog assignment #1 Schermerhorn

1.I always had been the person that is behind when it comes to the new technology out. I was the last of my friends to get a cell phone, laptop, even camera. I’ve always tried to not start relying on technology because I truly believe it will one day be the demise of the human race in some way. Whether it’s our health, or learning abilities, or even just life itself, but I won’t get into that. The most technological device my family owns, well to me, is probably our IPad; and Microsoft Word is reassuring me that this is a new technology because it isn’t yet a word in the spell check dictionary, unlike “IPod” which is considered a word. When my parents brought home the IPad I looked at it kind of confused, like it was an alien from a different planet or something. I honestly didn’t even know how to turn it on much less use the IPad to its full potential. I’m not the type of person who is going to read an instruction manual, I’ve gotten through my entire life not yet using one; the IPad was not going to defeat me. I just continued messing with the IPad until I got use to using it. It still amazes me that my finger can be used at a mouse. I finally figured out how to download apps, I’m not going to tell you how long because it is kind of embarrassing, but I downloaded games that’s the important part. If it wasn’t for my determination to figure out the IPad the phone I just got would have taken me three times as long to figure out, I also would have had no idea how to use the mac computers at the emporium. My parents’ buying the IPad actually is a technology that I consider a defying moment in my ability to adapt to other technologies in my life.

2.There are many similarities, not in the experience I just wrote about but in my life for sure. On the digital literacy online Molly wrote about how she used AIM and Myspace. I actually laughed out loud it brought back so many memories of how into my profiles I would get. I would literally spend hours deciding which song or background color I should choose to shoe “who I really am.” Unlike Molly I did not use the internet to creep on boys I had a crush on or girls I didn’t like. I always used technology in a positive way.

3.The digital literacy narratives that I read weren’t exactly informative on their opinions of what being digitally literate means. They just simple wrote about their use of technology through life. I on the other hand truly believe being someone who is digitally literate just gets technology. When I say the get technology I mean it comes easy to them they can just look at a digital task and do it, no questions asked.

4,Each statement I made on the ability to be digitally literate is simply an opinion. There is no fact or wrong or right answer. I have come to this conclusion through the experiences in my life where people older than me have taught me something new with technology. These are people who are not the “digital Natives,” I am. I am awful with technology we just don’t go well together. For instance I didn’t even know how to set up my printer or turn the alarm off on a clock in my dorm room so I just unplugged it. I have to be taught to do these things; I am not digitally literate even though I am considered to be digitally native.
